... Play
Golf FAST, SAFE, & COURTEOUSLY
This
is from John Gunby's handout
Three Ideas
to make lots of friends and influence people:
- Play FAST
- Play SAFE
- Play COURTEOUSLY
FAST means that you move quickly between shots. Hit the ball and
get out of the way.
SAFE means that you don't endanger other people with your club or ball. Know
what you're doing and watch what you're doing. Be aware of your surrounds.
COURTEOUS means be nice to the environment and to the people within the environment.
In fact, the first Section of the Rules of Golf deals with "Etiquette".
FAST PLAY
- Be ready to hit when it is your turn.
- Play "Ready" golf
- Watch your ball all the way and line it up with a landmark. Then proceed
in a straight line to that spot, if possible.
- Plan a shot as you're approaching it. Know the yardage markers before you
go out and play.
- Look at the next hold and plan the most "efficient" strategy for
getting over to it.
- Don't play "golf car derby"
- Don't play "ball mark tag" on the putting green.
- The first player to "Hole Out" has the Flagstick ready to put
into the Cup after all players have putted out.
- Move on to the next tee when you're done putting AND write down the scores
on the next tee box.
SAFE PLAY
- Look around you and make sure the area is clear before you swing.
- Be in safe position so that a golf ball (even mis-hit) will not hit you.
- If your ball might hit someone, yell "FORE" in plenty of time.
- Golf Cars are just that - CARS - they are not toys and they can injure if
driven recklessly.
COURTESY
- Make reservations to play golf and if you cannot make it or number of players
change, call ahead in plenty of time. Take note of dress codes or any requirements.
- Arrive at least 20 minutes before your reservation and check-in.
- Introduce yourself to your playing partners and identify your golf ball.
- Fix ball marks, even those of others who are not courteous.
- Rake the bunker after you have played from it.
- Keep golf cars away from the greens and tee (on the car paths or at least
30 yards away).
- Don't step in another play's line on the green.
- Watch your shadow & movement while others are playing.
- Do not tear up the ground with practice swings.
- Encourage others while playing.
- Encourage yourself and think highly of yourself.
- Thank others after your round for playing with you.
- Be aware that many more golfers are enjoying the golf course other than
your group or the group directly behind you or in front of you. You might
not see them, but your actions influence their enjoyment.
The "original" rule of golf was pretty simple. Play the course as
you find it, play the ball as it lies.
